Luigi Mangione Indicted On Murder & Terrorism Charges In UnitedHealthcare CEO Killing

Luigi Mangione has been formally indicted in the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg and New York City Police Department Commissioner Jessica Tisch announced the indictment in a press conference on Dec. 17, nearly two weeks after Thompson’s murder. According to Bragg’s office, Mangione is charged in a New York State Supreme Court indictment with one count of Murder in the First Degree, in furtherance of terrorism; two counts of Murder in the Second Degree, one of which is charged as killing as an act of terrorism; two counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree; four counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Third Degree; one count of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Fourth Degree; and one count of Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument in the Second Degree. “This type of premeditated, targeted gun violence cannot and will not be tolerated, and my office has been working day in and day out to bring the defendant to justice,” Bragg said. “I want to extend my heartfelt prayers to Mr. Thompson’s loved ones as they continue to grieve.” If convicted, Mangione faces a maximum sentence of life in prison without parole. He is being held without bail at a state correctional institution in Huntingdon, Penn., near where he was arrested on Dec. 9. His Pennsylvania attorney, Thomas Dickey, has said Mangione plans to plead not guilty. His New York counsel, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, declined NBC News’ request for comment following the indictment announcement.
