Kamala Harris and Doug Emhoff Share Kiss After Former VP Is Honored at 56th NAACP Image Awards

Former Vice President Kamala Harris was honored at the NAACP Image Awards on Saturday night in her first major public appearance since leaving the White House. The 49th VP accepted the prestigious NAACP’s Chairman’s Award during the ceremony as she delivered a powerful speech urging the public to remain resilient and vigilant. “While we have no illusions about what we are up against in this chapter in our American story, this chapter will be written not simply by whoever occupies the oval office nor by the wealthiest among us. The American story will be written by you. Written by us. By we the people,” Harris said in part. The former Vice President also highlighted the civil rights organization during her remarks. “As everyone here may know, I grew up inspired by the work of the NAACP, inspired by all those who took up the fight for justice, for equality, and for opportunity. Their example is part of the reason I chose a life of public service, seeking to always live by the words of a distinguished NAACP founder, W.E.B. Du Bois, when he said, ‘It is today that our best work can be done and not some future, day or future year.’ And this sense of urgency is what we must have today.” Following her speech, the politician posed for photos alongside her husband, former Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff. In a sweet moment, the couple shared a kiss. The Chairman’s Award is given to individuals who “have demonstrated exceptional public service and have utilized their platforms to effect meaningful change.”
