‘The Walking Dead’ Recap: Season 5, Episode 15, ‘Try’

The aftermath of what happened at the warehouse put everyone on edge inside Alexandria, most especially Rick, who made a big move.

Here’s our blow by blow recap of “The Walking Dead” Season 5, Episode 15, “Try”:

Rick’s Group & The Alexandrians, inside Alexandria: After a few moments of sitting in silence by candlelight with what’s left of her family, Deanna puts on a CD – Nine Inch Nails. It must have been Aiden’s (her son who died during the warehouse mission in last week’s episode). Next, the story flashes to Carol baking, with Jessie’s son Sam peeking in the window – he’s come by for a visit. Over in the bell tower, Sasha is distraught but standing lookout. Back at Deanna’s, Reg says they’ve had enough music and it’s shut off. Outside the door, Deanna finds a note from Carol expressing her sympathies over their loss, and with it, a casserole. Picking up the note, Deanna walks inside (leaving the food on the step) and burns it over a candle. Over at the bell tower, Sasha hits a walker with one shot. In a field, we catch up with Aaron and Daryl. They notice more walkers than usual and something else – there are people nearby.

Two Sides To Every Story

Nicholas and Glenn, inside Alexandria: In front of Deanna’s cameras, Nicholas begins his series of lies about what happened at the warehouse: Aiden was trying to save them from a roamer when Glenn distracted him! He had no plans to leave his friend! And, it wasn’t his fault that Noah died either. “They did this! It was them,” Nicholas insists to Deanna, who later sits and re-watches the tape of his post-warehouse run interview, looking for clues.

As for Glenn, he tells his version of the story to Rick — of how Nicholas tried to run, and of watching their friend Noah die. “They don’t know what they’re doing,” Rick says. It’s not good at Alexandria, but Glenn says they have to make this place work.

Carol and Rick, on the porch: It’s nighttime and Rick and Carol are discussing Jessie and Pete. That little visit Carol had earlier from Sam revealed the horrors the mom and children are going through. “He said his mom put a bolt on the inside of his closet,'” Carol tells Rick, of where Sam goes to hide when his mom gets abused. “Why do you care what happens to Jessie?” Rick asks Carol. “You know why. I know why you do. … I’ve seen you talk to her,” Carol says. Something has to be done. “If walkers hadn’t gotten Ed, I wouldn’t be standing here right now,” Carol says, speaking about her old life. “Yeah, you would,” Rick replies, before heading out into Alexandria.

Stopping near a lake, Rick is interrupted by Pete, who wants to say hello. Turning around slowly, Rick stares him down. “Keep walking,” he says, letting Pete go (without shooting him with the secret gun he has at his side).

Rick and Deanna at a graveyard: “I’m sorry for what happened. How are you holding up?” Rick asks Deanna as she looks over the fresh graves. She’s not, she tells him. “We have a problem with Pete,” Rick says, barely taking a beat. “I’d hoped it would get better,” Deanna replies, revealing she is aware Pete is abusive to Jessie. The first idea for dealing with the problem – separating them, Rick suggests. And if that doesn’t work, “I kill him — we kill him,” Rick says. Deanna won’t have it. Alexandria is “civilization” she insists. Exile is the only option she can contemplate.

Michonne and Rosita, in the woods: Sasha is missing so Michonne and Rosita head into the woods to find her. Their walk also gives them a moment to chat about settling into Alexandria. Being outside the walls is weird for the two women – the first time they’ve been outside since they settled in. “Noah’s dead… I just feel like I was asleep in there,” Michonne tells Rosita of how she is feeling. A little while later, the pair stumble across some dead walkers all shot in the back of the head. “She’s hunting them,” Michonne says of Sasha.

Carl and Enid, in the woods: Also in the woods are Carl and Enid. He can’t see her, but he can hear her. She teases him about following her. Eventually, Carl catches up to the girl and tells her she shouldn’t go out by herself. But Enid doesn’t care. She needs her space to run. And so she does. And for a moment, Carl and Enid are just kids, running and playing in the woods.

Glenn and Nicholas, inside Alexandria: “People like you are supposed to be dead, but these walls went up just in time, so you’re not. You don’t go outside those walls any more. Not by yourself, not with anyone else. And that’s how you’re gonna survive,” Glenn tells cowardly Nicholas, who seems to have none of the fears he did at the warehouse now that he’s back home. “Who the hell do you think you are?” Nicholas spits back. “I’m someone who knows who you are. I know what you did and it’s not gonna happen again,” Glenn says. It’s not a threat. He’s actually just trying to save the man.

Carl and Enid, in the woods: Sitting against a log, Carl and Enid chat about life. “We’re supposed to be out here. We’re supposed to feel like this. I don’t wanna forget. And running makes me feel better,” Enid tells Carl. But their bonding session is cut short. Walkers are coming. A hole in a tree provides them with shelter, and puts the two nose to nose. As they stay quiet to not attract the walkers, Carl brushes his hand against Enid’s.

Nicholas, out in the woods: Scraping away some of the dirt, Nicholas pulls out a paint can from where he presumably buried it. Inside of it? A gun with a letter “J” on it. Now, he’s armed.

Sasha, Michonne and Rosita, in the woods: “I’m sick of playing defense,” Sasha tells her companions. “So you’re just gonna take on all of them?” Michonne asks, as Sasha shoots walker after walker, hitting each of them in the head. “Yeah,” Sasha says. As Sasha shoots, Michonne has flashbacks to her early days, including when she had her walker pets. It makes her raise her gun and shoot too. And then, Rosita gets involved, taking down walkers with her knife. When it’s over, Sasha breaks down over Noah. “I told him he would make it,” she says before walking off.

Daryl and Aaron, in the woods: Creeping slowly through the woods, Daryl and Aaron find what can only be described as a horror – arms detached from their torso and on the ground. Knowing this happened recently, they follow some tracks. It leads them to another horrendous site. A dead, naked woman is strapped to a tree and her insides have been ripped out. Holding up her head, Daryl sees a “W” carved into it.

Rick Vs. Pete

Rick and Jessie, in her garage: “He’s hitting you. He’s hurting you. It has to stop,” Rick tells Jessie. Jessie starts to defend her husband. Rick tells her it will get worse and she’ll die. “Why do you care? Why is this so important to you?” Jessie asks him, before reminding Rick she’s married, and walking back inside her house.

As he hits the street, Rick looks around – old folks chatting on a porch, Enid reading by a fence, another kid walking his dog. It’s too much. He opens the door to Jessie’s house and tells her the truth. “You don’t get to just live. You don’t get to put it off or wish it away. If you don’t fight, you die,” he tells her. “And I don’t want you to die. I can help you. I can keep you and your boys safe. I can,” he says. “All you have to do is say yes.” She asks if he’d do this for someone else. At first Rick doesn’t answer. Then, he does. “No,” he says. And then, she answers too. “Yes,” she says.

Without missing a beat, Pete enters the room. “Rick, what are you doing here? … I’m gonna have to ask you to leave, Rick,” Pete tells him. Things quickly escalate. Pow! Pow! The two men trade violent blows and their conflict spills out of a window and onto the sidewalk.

The commotion gets everyone running toward the two men – Enid, Glenn, Sam (who watches, while hiding behind Carol). Jessie gets on top of Pete as he and Rick bloody each other up, but Pete throws her off. Rick gets the upper hand. Carl tries to get his dad to stop, but he’s thrown off too. Finally, it’s Deanna who stops the fight. “Damn it Rick, I said stop!” she yells. “Or what, you gonna kick me out?” he yells, pulling out his secret gun. “You still don’t get it. None of you do,” Rick continues. “You wanna live? You want this place to stay standing? Your way of doing things is done! Things don’t get better because you want them too. Starting right now we have to live in the real world. We have to control who lives here,” he says. And Deanna agrees with him, just not in the way Rick suggests. “That’s never been more clear to me than it is right now,” she replies.

“You mean me? Your way is gonna destroy this place,” Rick says, continuing to speak his peace. “If you don’t fight, you die. I’m not gonna stand by–” BAM! Michonne — in her uniform — comes up and knocks Rick out and takes his gun.

“The Walking Dead” continues Sunday at 9 PM ET/PT on AMC.
