2011 Emmy Surprises & Snubs: Lea Michele & Kyra Sedgwick Out! ‘Modern Family’ Cast & Melissa McCarthy In

Many familiar TV favorites were nominated Thursday morning for the 2011 Primetime Emmy Awards, but there were also some fresh faces in the mix while some very popular favorites were left out. AccessHollywood.com takes a closer look at the surprise nominations and those who were snubbed!

The cast of “Modern Family” woke up to good news, as all six adult stars were nominated for in Supporting Acting categories for the ABC ensemble comedy.

“Mike & Molly” star Melissa McCarthy – who was presenting the awards live this morning was left visibly shocked and breathless by her nod for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series – received her first Emmy nom.

Other major category first-time nominees this year include Ed O’Neill for “Modern Family,” Johnny Galecki for “The Big Bang Theory,” Mireille Enos for “The Killing,” Timothy Olyphant for “Justified,” Peter Dinklage for “Games of Thrones,” Josh Charles for “The Good Wife,” Walton Goggins for “Justified,” Margo Martindale for “Justified” and Michelle Forbes for “The Killing.”

“Glee” stars Chris Colfer and Jane Lynch earned noms, but series star and resident diva Lea Michele (who will only be returning for one more year on the hit FOX series and was nominated last year) along with Matthew Morrison (who was also nominated last year) failed to get nominations.

Kyra Sedgwick, who took home the 2010 Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for “The Closer,” was snubbed this year. Katey Sagal, who won the Golden Globe for her role in “Sons of Anarchy,” failed to earn an Emmy nomination.

Many TV fans hoped AMC’s “Walking Dead” and “The Killing” would earn nominations in the Drama Series category, but the TV newbies were passed over.

In the reality TV world, “Project Runway’s” host Heidi Klum failed to earn a nod in the Reality Series host category, but “So You Think You Can Dance” host Cat Deeley earned a surprise nomination.

The 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards will be handed out September 18 on FOX.
